Cool nights, soil that still holds summer warmth, and steady rain give new grass a real chance to root before the first freeze. The problem is that the work takes machines most homeowners do not own, do not want to store, and would only use once a year. That is exactly what a rental counter is for.

The Fall Lawn Reset, Step by Step
A fall lawn project is not one job, it is a short sequence of them, and the order matters more than most people expect. Overseeding before you aerate wastes seed. Fertilizing before you dethatch feeds the thatch layer instead of the roots. Here is the order our staff walks customers through every September.
- Cut low and clear the surface. Drop your mower a notch or two below your summer height and bag the clippings. Seed needs to reach soil, not sit on a mat of grass.
- Dethatch if the layer is thick. Push a finger into the lawn. If there is more than about half an inch of spongy brown material between the green blades and the dirt, run a lawn comber over it first.
- Aerate. A plug aerator pulls cores out of compacted soil and opens a path for water, air, and nutrients. This is the step that makes everything after it work.
- Overseed. Spread seed immediately after aerating, while the holes are still open. Seed that falls into an aeration hole germinates at a far better rate than seed sitting on top.
- Feed and lime. A broadcast spreader puts down starter fertilizer and, in much of our region, lime. East Tennessee soil runs acidic in a lot of yards.
- Roll and water. A light pass with a lawn roller presses seed into contact with soil. Then keep it damp until germination.
- Stay ahead of the leaves. New grass smothers fast under wet leaves. A push leaf blower keeps a young lawn breathing through October and November.
Steps two through four can often be done in one weekend. If you are renting, that is worth planning around, because a weekend rate covers more ground than a single day.

Aerators
Summer is prime time to bring the outside of your home back to life. Rent a pressure washer for siding, driveways, and fences, then pair a sander and a paint sprayer to take a tired deck from gray to great in a single weekend.
Dethatchers and Combers
A gas powered lawn comber lifts out the thatch layer that blocks water and seed from reaching soil. Most yards do not need this every year, but a lawn that has gone a few seasons without it usually does.
Seeders and Spreaders
Push type broadcast spreaders handle seed, fertilizer, and lime. For smaller yards, tight corners, and slopes, a shoulder-strap broadcast seed sower does the job without hauling a machine around.
Rollers, Tillers, and Ground Prep
Pull and push lawn rollers press seed into soil contact and smooth out winter heaving. If you are starting a section from bare ground instead of overseeding, we rent rear tine tillers and mid-tine rototillers to break it up first, plus a sod cutter for lifting out old turf.
Leaf and Cleanup Equipment
A 9 horsepower push type gas leaf blower moves wet leaves that a handheld unit will not budge. We also rent hedge trimmers, gas lawn edgers, and tree pruners for the trim work that tends to pile up in the fall.
What It Takes to Get It Home
Worth knowing before you show up. The self-propelled aerators, dethatchers, spreaders, and push blowers fit in a pickup bed or a small utility trailer, and most customers load them without trouble. The pull-behind aerators and rollers need a lawn tractor or riding mower with a standard hitch to actually use, so make sure you have one before you rent one. The ride-on aerator is heavier and needs a trailer rated for it.

What order should I do fall lawn work in?
